Unhappy at Work? Here's What To Do Next
“If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy, and inspires your hopes.” — Andrew Carnegie
Working in a company or organization fills much of your time every week as you take care of the tasks and responsibilities you have been employed to perform. There will be instances when you have to sacrifice your personal time to meet a specific goal or to complete a project.
If this encroachment of time continues, you may start feeling burnout or unhappiness. Or, perhaps, other cultural or emotional struggles at work may cause you to dread going to work each day.
If you've ever experienced this, you know how hard it is to drag yourself to work when you reach that point of unhappiness. Don’t lose hope! You can counter these feelings by identifying ways to empower yourself.
Here are a few suggestions that can help you take charge of the situation:
Think of ways how you can do your work differently
Focus on situations that you can control
Seek change in your daily routine
Take charge of your life
One key here is to engage in introspection, where you examine your life and see what changes should be made to move forward driven by a deeper purpose rather than just letting life happen to you.
Be proactive, not reactive. Don't lose hope - take action, and make changes.

CAREER TIPS
Is It Better to Work in Large or Small Engineering Companies? It Depends…
Throughout my career, I have evolved and changed as I have worked in small, medium, and large organizations. Through these experiences, I have needed to learn to adapt to the processes and systems in place and even contribute to creating those processes.
The difference in the places I have worked is the dynamics and complexity of the internal processes and the purpose of each one to run the business smoothly. In a small or medium business, there were instances when I had to wear different hats in order to deliver what was needed. In a large company, I was part of just operating within the system in a more defined role.
As I shift from working for a company to launching my own business, I am grateful for the skills and knowledge I gained during those key years of my career about operating in different-sized businesses.
Currently, I wear all the "hats," and I get to do almost everything. I have also learned how to find experts to learn from and collaborate with, which has helped me grow and progress in this new stage of my career/business.
At different stages in your career and in your life, you will take on different roles in different working environments. None of them is inherently good or bad, but you might decide if they are or are not a good fit for you at that time.
You might simply consider what you want to learn, which could lead you to determine what sort of company or environment you would be best suited to work at right now.
What’s the right fit for you at this stage?

📚 BOOK RECOMMENDATION
This book is primarily for those who are a bit later in their lives/careers, but it’s still a great read no matter what stage you are in.
Many of us assume that the more successful we are, the less susceptible we become to the sense of professional and social irrelevance that often accompanies aging. But the truth is, the greater our achievements and our attachment to them, the more we notice our decline, and the more painful it is when it occurs.
What can we do, starting now, to make our older years a time of happiness, purpose, and yes, success?
At the height of his career at the age of 50, Arthur Brooks embarked on a seven-year journey to discover how to transform his future from one of disappointment over waning abilities into an opportunity for progress. From Strength to Strength is the result, a practical roadmap for the rest of your life.
Drawing on social science, philosophy, biography, theology, and Eastern wisdom, as well as dozens of interviews with everyday men and women, Brooks shows us that true life success is well within our reach. By refocusing on certain priorities and habits that anyone can learn, such as deep wisdom, detachment from empty rewards, connection, and service to others, and spiritual progress, we can set ourselves up for increased happiness.
Read this book and you, too, can go from strength to strength.
