CAREER TIPS
Feeling Stuck in Your Career? Try This!
So you have a job interview coming up. You want to put your best foot forward, as this is a great opportunity. You know you can be a great asset to the company and the team, but you can only do that if they believe that about you from your interview.
How do you make sure you are ready to execute at a high level? What do you do in the days leading up to it and even those final moments to give yourself a good shot at landing the opportunity?
The Five Ps. Here they are.
Prepare
You need to do everything you can to prepare well. Invest your time on this. Collect all your relevant resources beforehand. Get your stories ready in a STAR-based format so you can answer behavioral interview questions with confidence.
Spend time doing appropriate research on the company and team you are applying for, getting to know their values and opportunities. Consider who will be in the interview and what they will want to know. Explore the essential things you need to know about the role and integrate how your skills and values can add value to the team.
Pee
Literally, go to the bathroom right before the interview! You've got to relieve yourself so that it won't be a distraction. While you’re there, look in the mirror, make sure you’re looking sharp, and smile at yourself. It may be simple, but it can avoid major embarrassment during the interview.
Physical
One of the best ways to get ready in the moments before an interview is to keep your body active. You don't want to walk in there and feel drowsy or lack energy. Get your blood moving! You can do some push-ups, go for a walk, or do any other movement you can think of to raise your energy without wearing you out.
Power pose
One of the most widely watched TED Talks of all time is by Amy Cuddy, in which she discusses the power of body language. Getting in a Superman pose with your hands on your hips and a strong body position for a couple of minutes can decrease your stress levels and, therefore, increase your confidence in a normally stressful situation.
Be Present
Finally, take a few deep breaths and be fully present in the moment. Release your worry about what preparation you could have done that you didn't—that time has passed. Don't worry about what the final outcome will be, as that moment hasn't arrived yet. Be as present as you can be with yourself and the people you're talking to, seeking to connect with them as humans. If you are fully present and make a connection, you're actually much more likely to stay relaxed and focused and make the most of the experience.
Remember the Five Ps. Put them into action, do your very best, and then leave the outcome to be whatever it is. You've done all you can and if this one doesn't work out, the next one might!

📚 BOOK RECOMMENDATION
Go into your next job interview with confidence, ready to knock any question they throw at you out of the park!
The key to landing that dream job or big promotion often comes down to how you perform in the job interview. After bombing some interviews early in his career, Sam Owens vowed that would never happen to him again and began work on a system to ensure he was ready for even the most oddball questions in future interviews.
The system he developed proved so successful that Sam built a career coaching business around teaching it to others and has now coached thousands of people on how to prepare for interviews.
In I Hate Job Interviews, Sam shares his proven methodology and provides simple frameworks and demonstrations on how to answer any type of job interview question. Using this proven system, job candidates will gain confidence in answering introductory, behavioral, hypothetical, opinion, personal, think-on-your-feet, salary, and self-awareness questions.
Admittedly, I haven’t read this book yet, but I have connected with and followed Sam, and I know what he shares is solid.
