Updating Naval Infrastructure at Pearl Harbor
Even if you’re not a boater or sailor, you can still imagine that the process of doing maintenance work on boats and ships is a big issue because a good chunk of them is underwater all of the time! Enter - dry docks. Areas that can take in a ship, support it, and drain the water so that all areas of the ship can be accessed and worked on.
However, modern naval vessels continue to grow larger and more complex. Consequently, the US Navy must upgrade its drydock infrastructure, a process underway at historic Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Dry Dock 5 will replace Dry Dock 3, the smallest of the four existing Dry Docks that was originally built in 1942 and lacks the size to service some of the modern submarines and surface ships.
This is a big project, to the tune of $3.42 billion, and is part of the Navy’s larger Shipyard Infrastructure Optimization Program (SIOP). This project was started last year but will be completed in 2027 if all goes to plan. Using largely a local workforce, the project will create about 2,500 new jobs during the construction period. Not bad!

🏆 CAREER TIPS
👊🏽 Learning the Lessons of Self-Leadership
Elements of Self-Leadership
If I were to put self-leadership into one simple statement, it's probably this - how well do you follow through on the commitments you make to yourself and live in congruence with your own stated values and goals? Who we are inside matters, as it drives what happens on the outside and thus impacts others around us. Hence, we must master this inner game. When you say you're going to do something, do it.
The Importance of Vision and Clarity
In a team or organization, leaders need to clarify the vision and the reasons behind it. In our own lives, too few people even spend time crafting a vision for their personal lives. Their goals and dreams are diminished or nonexistent, or they just feel out of reach.
Create a vision for yourself, and use that as a driving force to create a vision as a leader for others. If you don’t, why would anyone want to follow you?
Rating Your Level of Self-Leadership
Take a moment right now and give yourself a simple rating of self-leadership on a scale of 1-5. Here are a few questions you might consider asking yourself to complete the rating:
Have you identified your core values? Do you usually live by them?
How often do you keep commitments you make to yourself?
Do you have a vision for your life and who you want to become? Are you taking actions that will make that a reality?
Do you like yourself? Right here and now, not just waiting for something to happen in the future?
Figuring out where you land in relation to these questions can help you identify areas where you have an opportunity to improve your self-leadership.
Seeking Help from a Leadership Expert
This work is hard to do on our own and we all need some help. A leadership and career development expert can help you learn how to identify those things that are important to you and then start taking action to move toward those goals.
If this is something you truly want to improve on, it’s worth investing in yourself to get some support and guidance on your journey!
Engineer of the WEEK 1856 - 1915 Engineer - Inventor |
Nikola Tesla, born on July 10, 1856, in Smiljan, Croatia (then part of the Austrian Empire), was a brilliant and enigmatic inventor, engineer, and futurist. He immigrated to the United States in the late 19th century and quickly gained recognition for his innovative work in electrical engineering. Tesla's contributions include the development of alternating current (AC) electrical systems, numerous inventions related to electricity and magnetism, and pioneering work in wireless communication. Despite his incredible accomplishments, he faced financial challenges and spent his later years in relative obscurity, but his legacy as one of history's greatest inventors endures, with his name associated with countless technological advancements and the Tesla electric car company bearing his name in the 21st century.

📚 BOOK RECOMMENDATION
The Anatomy of Peace: Resolving the Heart of Conflict by The Arbinger Institute
Written as an engaging story, this book shows how mistaken views can cause people to misread situations and exacerbate the issues they wish to improve. Arguing that it is only after they understand themselves and get their internal house so that they can correctly confront external conflicts. The book shows what can be done to make that happen, and how to make inner peace a potent tool for achieving outer satisfaction.
I don’t overstate it when I say that this book and its principles changed my life. Read this one. You won’t regret it.
