A Few Excellent Podcasts for Engineers

Looking for your next podcast listen? These podcasts are excellent ones for engineers to listen to, learn, and accelerate their careers. Pick one or more you’ll enjoy!

I spent a few years hosting this podcast as The Engineering Career Coach. It’s recently been rebranded as the AEC Leadership podcast, and has some great content on leadership, career development, balancing tech/soft skills, and more!

The Being An Engineer podcast interviews the world’s highest performing engineers to learn their lessons for success so we can apply them to our own lives and careers. The podcast is a central repository in which to collect and share industry knowledge & best practices associated with the discipline of engineering.

I was a guest on Season 4 Episode 46.

Level-up Engineering reveals actionable management secrets from some of the most successful tech leaders. The interviews, sharply focusing on the biggest challenges tech leaders are facing, are often with leaders from companies such as Intercom, Buffer and Uber. The podcast gives important insights to 'level-up' management skills and to take developer teams to the next level.

I was a guest on Episode 14 about transitioning from engineer to manager.

All SE Radio episodes are original content. Each episode comprises two speakers to ensure a lively listening experience. CAREER TIPS

Feeling Stuck in Your Career? Try This!

One of Isaac Newton’s laws of motion states that “An object at rest stays at rest and an object in motion stays in motion . . unless acted upon by an outside force.”

This is true of physical objects. It's also true of you and your career.

If you're in a space where you're "at rest" in your career, or maybe you're in motion but moving in the wrong direction, then something needs to change. After years (or sometimes weeks or months) in your job, it is possible that you might feel stagnant like there’s no more room for improvement or no more opportunity to grow.

We all have experienced this in one way or another, and it is perfectly normal to feel that way. Your feelings are valid, and of course, there are ways to address these concerns.

You will likely need to find some sort of "outside force" to help you move in the right direction. What could that be?

Here are examples of "outside forces" and actions you can take to move forward in your career:

  • Have a clear vision of your career path. What do you want to accomplish in the next 1, 3, 5, or 10 years?

  • Take action, like expanding your network and talking to people regarding any possible career opportunity.

  • Enroll in short courses that will help you enhance your skills.

  • Consult with a career coach to learn the best and most effective techniques for growing in your career at this point (yes, I'm a bit biased on this one).

For these to work, you will need to shift your thoughts from feeling stuck to having a growth mindset. Evaluate yourself, identify what you need to learn from your opportunities, look forward to the possibilities outside of your comfort zone, and accept feedback and grow from it.

What outside force will propel you forward?

đź“š BOOK RECOMMENDATION

If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed.

On May 17, 2014, Admiral William H. McRaven addressed the graduating class of the University of Texas at Austin on their Commencement day. Taking inspiration from the university's slogan, "What starts here changes the world," he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long naval career but also throughout his life. He explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves and the world for the better.

He took that address and turned it into this book, and it’s a good one.

Ever since I read this book, I’ve been making my bed more often. You might too!
