๐ŸŒ† How will smart cities shape the future?

Plus: How to move from a Prevention to a Promotion Mindset, and book recommendation of the week

How smart are cities going to get anyway?

As time passes, infrastructure is trying to play catch up with the technology we wear on our arms and carry in our pockets.

Cities and countries are harder to build than phones and even cars, and yet we want them to work well together.

Do you think smart cities will become the norm someday? Japan is trying to test that out. Read more below!

๐ŸŒ‰ Trying to Create the Smartest City in the World

Smart cities have been talked about for a while now as the technology around connected devices and the Internet of Things continues to evolve.

But Japan intends to take it to the next level, and be a world leader in the creation of Woven City.

The effort is led by Toyota Motor Corporation, and will complete phase 1 in 2024. Itโ€™s being built as a test course for many new technologies, systems, and social shifts with an emphasis on improving society.

The city will cover about 175 acres and start with about 360 people, but will get up to 2,000 people eventually.

At the heart of the project is improving mobility. There will be distinct pathways for automated vehicles, pedestrians, and a mixed mobility pathway. Some will be above and some beneath ground.

But itโ€™s not just about cars and vehicles. They will work on improvements to energy, agriculture and nutrition, healthcare, education, entertainment, safety, housing, and more!

Every resident will be considered an โ€œinventorโ€ that is allowed to create and test new ideas at the urban scale, setting up an environment that promotes accelerated innovation.

The cool thing about a project like this is that there is no end. The research and data collection efforts will help them continue to iterate and improve as time goes on, and the city will be constantly evolving.

Would you want to try living in a city like that?

๐Ÿ† CAREER TIPS

The Power of Shifting from a Prevention to a Promotion Mindset

Do you find yourself more driven by opportunity or avoiding failure? Do you prefer to move towards your goal or away from something you don't like?

These questions may seem simple, but they may help you determine whether you have a Prevention or a Promotion mindset.

A Prevention mindset is primarily focused on preventing failure, loss, and change. Those with a prevention mindset are primarily focused on avoiding losses and may be driven by fear. While they may be protecting against risk, they may also miss out on opportunities that could help them reach their goals.

I have conversations with people in a Prevention mindset all the time, and here's the irony - when you make decisions based on fear, you are actually MORE likely to cause the problems you are afraid of!

On the other hand, those with a Promotion mindset are focused on winning, reaching their goals, and seizing opportunities. They are willing to take appropriate risks to make progress, even if it means stepping out of their comfort zones. Instead of saying "we can't afford it," they ask, "what can we do to afford it?"

Of course you can take this too far and be too risky, but embracing promotion-minded actions is almost always a good idea!

If you want to shift towards a Promotion mindset, here are a few ideas:

  1. Imagine the positive results of accomplishing your goals. Spend some time each day visualizing the outcomes you want to achieve.

  2. Journal your goals and desires in different areas of your life. This can help you narrow down on primary goals in each category.

  3. Focus on what you can gain and develop, rather than what you lack. By seeing the opportunities, you can shift away from fear of loss and towards potential for success.

  4. Make a commitment to take action towards your goals. This may require taking appropriate risks, stepping out of your comfort zone, and focusing on your objectives.

๐Ÿง‘๐Ÿผโ€โœˆ๏ธ By shifting your mindset, you can shift your actions and opportunities to improve outcomes in your leadership, career, and personal development.

Engineer of the WEEK

1856 - 1915

Engineer - Inventor

Nikola Tesla, born on July 10, 1856, in Smiljan, Croatia (then part of the Austrian Empire), was a brilliant and enigmatic inventor, engineer, and futurist. He immigrated to the United States in the late 19th century and quickly gained recognition for his innovative work in electrical engineering. Tesla's contributions include the development of alternating current (AC) electrical systems, numerous inventions related to electricity and magnetism, and pioneering work in wireless communication. Despite his incredible accomplishments, he faced financial challenges and spent his later years in relative obscurity, but his legacy as one of history's greatest inventors endures, with his name associated with countless technological advancements and the Tesla electric car company bearing his name in the 21st century.
