Are Engineering Wages Still Growing?

Engineering is a broad discipline with many different fields, so things are always different across those disciplines.

However, one of the top sources of compensation data, Payscale, says that, yes, wages are still growing for engineers.

In Q4 of 2023, the overall Engineering and Science field had wage growth at 4.7% compared to the previous year, but only 0.4% from the previous quarter.

So yes, things are growing, but they might be slowing down. But that also makes sense because there was rapid wage growth in 2021 and 2022, and with other financial pressures like inflation and higher interest rates, things were bound to cool off a bit.

But what about you? If you’re wondering if you’re underpaid, fairly paid, or overpaid, there is data out there to figure that out. You can also map that against your geographical location, level of education and experience, and the responsibilities you are taking on at work.

It’s helpful to do this at least yearly and have frank conversations with your leader or HR about this to ensure you’re in a good spot.

Don’t just take what you’re given - know the numbers!

Clear the Clutter to Free the Mind - A Dose of Minimalism

"The first step in crafting the life you want is to get rid of everything you don't." - Joshua Becker.

For the last few years, the principle of minimalism has been trending worldwide. It has become the subject of numerous self-help books, Netflix series, and more. The movement has resonated with many people.

It inspired everyone to declutter their homes, get rid of things that are not of use anymore, and keep only those that are essential.

Does everyone need to embrace every piece of it to get some value out of the ideas? No. I don't intend to scale down to a tiny home or get rid of almost everything.

Yet this principle does not only apply to material possessions - it can also be enforced in managing your goals and priorities in life.

There could be practices or things you've been doing that are weighing you down or becoming a hindrance to your growth and development.

Maybe there are people in your life that are simply a drain and you need to reduce or eliminate their influence in your life.

Acknowledging these stumbling blocks to your growth is the first step in determining which beliefs, people, and practices to keep and which to let go of to make room for things of greater value and impact.

What areas of your life can you declutter so you can focus more on things that matter?

You might just find some ways to free up a little mental space for more growth!

Engineer of the WEEK

1856 - 1915

Engineer - Inventor

Nikola Tesla, born on July 10, 1856, in Smiljan, Croatia (then part of the Austrian Empire), was a brilliant and enigmatic inventor, engineer, and futurist. He immigrated to the United States in the late 19th century and quickly gained recognition for his innovative work in electrical engineering. Tesla's contributions include the development of alternating current (AC) electrical systems, numerous inventions related to electricity and magnetism, and pioneering work in wireless communication. Despite his incredible accomplishments, he faced financial challenges and spent his later years in relative obscurity, but his legacy as one of history's greatest inventors endures, with his name associated with countless technological advancements and the Tesla electric car company bearing his name in the 21st century.

📚 BOOK RECOMMENDATION

Let’s stick with the theme of minimalism today.

This book asks the question… “How might your life be better with less?

The principles inside move past simple decluttering to show how minimalism makes room to reevaluate and heal the seven essential relationships in our lives: stuff, truth, self, money, values, creativity, and people. The authors use their own experiences―and those of the people they have met along the minimalist journey―to provide a template for how to live a fuller, more meaningful life.

Because once you have less, you can make room for the right kind of more.
