Some Good News for the Engineering Profession
Good news!
“Overall employment in engineering occupations is projected to grow faster than the average for all occupations from 2024 to 2032” according to an article by DesignNews that references data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Around 188,000 openings are projected each year in engineering due to employment growth and the need to replace existing workers. Not bad!
Also, the median annual wage for engineers was over $90,000, which is not bad, especially as the median wage for all occupations was about $48,000.
In fact, BLS data also shares the salaries across different engineering disciplines.
The highest-paid were computer hardware engineers, with a median pay of $138,080. Right behind them were petroleum engineers and aerospace engineers.
Towards the bottom were technicians and drafters of various varieties.
So yes, it literally pays to have more specific skills.

CAREER TIPS
Building a Life and Career That Excites You
Have you ever asked yourself, "Am I building a life and a career that I’m truly excited about?"
I did a few years ago. I was in a position where I was making good money and had grown in my career, but things had changed and I was no longer in a position where I was happy and fulfilled. This wasn't the first time I had felt that way, either.
But I know I’m not the only one. I’ve talked to hundreds of engineers and tech professionals who are also facing this kind of difficulty. Certainly, you may think you are on the right career path if your salary is good or the company seems very stable, yet perhaps you still have doubts and thoughts that something is lacking and needs to change.
Remember that the measurement of success is not simply about the money you have but also your impact on other people, building meaningful relationships, and living a life of integrity.
When you start to integrate things that you love to do, things you are good at, and also to identify what values and purposes you may want to accomplish in life, that’s when you can see ways to adjust things as you design your future. From there, you can think of what could be your next steps as you take this path and what strategies you should implement so you can get where you want to go.
Reflect on and ask yourself these questions, perhaps in a journal:
What do I really want?
Where can I deliver great impact and do great work?
What changes do I need to make to reach these goals?
What do I feel I am on this earth to do/accomplish?
The results and changes likely won’t be immediate even if you answer these questions, but if you can start today, then you can start the process. If you start today, you can get to your "someday."
As you do these things, you will uncover some of the most precious things you want to achieve and become, and you will be more motivated than ever to achieve them.

đź“š BOOK RECOMMENDATION
This book, to me, is a must-read.
Designers create worlds and solve problems using design thinking. Look around your office or home—at the tablet or smartphone you may be holding or the chair you are sitting in. Everything in our lives was designed by someone. And every design starts with a problem that a designer or team of designers seeks to solve.
In this book, Bill Burnett and Dave Evans show us how design thinking can help us create a life that is both meaningful and fulfilling, regardless of who or where we are, what we do or have done for a living, or how young or old we are.
The same design thinking responsible for amazing technology, products, and spaces can be used to design and build your career and your life, a life of fulfillment and joy, constantly creative and productive, one that always holds the possibility of surprise.
Design your life.
